HARVEST

👀

Hi ya'll!

Harvest is my word of the year for 2020. I have been sowing seeds,  planting, watering and nurturing for years.  Now it is time for me to gather my harvest.

"Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few"
Matthew 9:37

So what has all the sowing, planting and nurturing entailed, you may ask.  Well let me tell you:

1.  I have been a good steward with my finances.  Sure, I could have been more diligent and done some more fiscally responsible things, but I have consistently paid myself first, tithed, and for the most part used cash.

2.  I have been a good steward with my faith.  Studied my word, meditated and prayed.  I am still working on trusting God completely and listening to Him regarding every part of my life.  I don't know why I think I can or am even able to handle ANY of it, but hopefully one day I'll learn :)

3.  I have been a good steward with my network.  I have cultivated friendships, strengthened relationships with family, and made it a priority to be present for significant moments.

But I gotta be real, here is what I have not been that great at sowing:

1. Being a good steward with my body.  For years I was dedicated and consistent with physical activity 2 to 3 times a week, but work challenges and anxiety has derailed my efforts this last year and half.

2. Being a good steward of my time.  I am not THAT important at my corporate job, so I don't understand why I think I have to be on call for every email and every request.  It's okay to have breakfast and lunchtime workout and planned routine.  By the way, time is my new currency-more details on that later.

3.  Being a good steward of my talent.  Not that I have been lazy, but I have been apprehensive and at times apathetic.

So in this year of HARVEST, I will exploit all the seeds I have planted.  How will this manifest?
Because I have been a good steward of my finances, my account will overflow.  I will invest boldly in my business for my expected return. Because I have been a good steward of my faith, I will consistently pray for bigger and better in all aspects of my life.   Because I have been a good steward of my network and cultivating relationships, I will attract healthy relationship(s) that will abundantly bless me.   And that will grow the confidence to be a better agent for my body, time and talent.  To make it measurable:
1. 182 days of movement
2. Make every space of my home a pleasure (to cultivate creativity, inspiration, and good habits)
3. Check on my business everyday

So what's different this year versus any other year?  Don't we say "new year new me" every January 1st?  The big difference this year is HUGE - so listen (read) closely:  I KNOW I DESERVE IT

Closure is for weaves, not Relationships

So today I feel compelled to talk about a topic I know next to nothing about; MEN.  But just because I don't know anything about a topic doesn't stop me from giving my opinion based on nothing but what I have concocted in my head.  So word of advice to any single women reading this - don't take my thoughts as ANY kind of help or advice.  Half of the time I don't know what I'm talking about.  LOL.  But here it goes anyway.

There are 3 things that I know about men 1) For the most part, they don't go shopping just to browse with no intentions.  They have something or a look in mind that they want to try.  2) When they know what they want, they buy it.  If they need a new pair of black slacks and they see a pair of black slacks that they like, fit well and are the right price, they buy it.  No need to go looking around for something better.  3) Men don't do closure.  When they are done, they are done.

Since these are the only 3 things that I know for sure, I take this little knowledge and apply it to EVERY dealing I have with the opposite sex.  I have nothing else to go on and we all know they don't speak the same language as women, so if they are telling me something different I don't understand it anyway.  LOL.   So what does this mean in relationships & dating??  How does this knowledge help and guide me??   Let me break it down.....

1)For the most part, they don't go shopping just to browse with no intentions.  They have something in mind that they want to buy - when he approaches you he knows what he wants from you; how you respond determines if he puts you back on the shelf, tries you on, or uses you for a different purpose.  Whether he's looking at you for a good time girl, someone he wants to get to know, or one night stand he has a plan in mind before he even asks your name.  So don't be mad at end of  conversation if he doesn't ask for your number, it wasn't going anywhere anyway.  And PLEASE don't offer him a sheet of paper & pen when he doesn't ask for it.....just THIRSTY.

2) When they know what they want, they buy it.  If they need a new pair of black slacks and they see a pair of black slacks that they like, fit well and are the right price, they buy it.  No need to go looking around for something better - if he does not want to be in a serious relationship, I don't care how wonderful you are, it’s not happening.  He's not looking for slacks altho you are a really nice black pair.  On the other hand, when he is ready to settle down he looks around him for who can fit the bill and claims her. i know, i know...I hear ya and have heard it all before  "what was so wrong with me, i woulda been with him? what's so special about her over me?'  now, ignoring any crazy issues that you have that she doesn't...nothing.  you are the same.  her timing was just better......which leads me to my final certain truth......

3) Men don't do closure.  When they are done, they are done - you will never know what was wrong with you because he won't tell you.  maybe it was your fault, maybe it wasn't.  maybe he was just scared to love you, but I doubt it.  maybe you could have done something differently, maybe not.   The only thing you can do is reflect on the choices and decisions you made and move on....trying to figure him out is just wasting your time, because you're probably wrong.  LOL

But let’s be honest with ourselves. What are you really seeking with this “closure” that you are looking for?  To get him back? No, we know it’s too late for that.  We’ve seen the signs.  An apology? For what, that’s not going to change the situation that he wants out and we are left holding the pieces.  NO, what we really want is validation.  Validation that it wasn’t us.  Validation that we are pretty enough, good enough, smart enough, clean enough, talented enough.  This closure thing isn’t even about HIM, it’s about YOU/ME.  So if by some chance he does give you the closure you are looking for, take it as a blessing.  But if not, the work is still on YOU.  You have to self-reflect and evaluate the choices, actions and emotions that you made and that you allowed.  And learn from that.

Now I know you are asking, has this advice and knowledge helped me in any way with the opposite sex?  No, not really.  LOL.  But it hasn't hurt me either, so that's gotta count for something.  so what compelled me to re-write about this today?  My new obsession with Being Mary Jane.  Such a real show with real circumstances.  Now, we might not show up at the friend’s house asking about the ex boo, but the need to have closure and to know why is very real.

You Don't Have to Read This

Hey!  So I have some thoughts, opinions, observations about some current topics that I wanted to share. Nothing at all earth shattering or worth significant import, but I know ya'll wanted to know my thoughts about them, so here goes.  LOL

A few weeks ago, a pastor at a large church made a controversial statement in one of his sermons.  He stated a line from a famous philosopher of our time, Chris Brown.  This pastor quoted C.B. and said "these hoes ain't loyal"  Many people stated that this type of secular message did not belong in the church, and that the language was offensive and that it was not biblically based.  I listened to the message online and began to laugh at myself.  Why?  Because I had never really listened to this pastor before.  I have seen him and know about him, but was never inspired to actually listen to a message of his until now.  So you know what, mission accomplished.  Here's my thoughts on the subject; similar to gospel rap, I don't need the "flash" to get me to worship and pray.....but some people do.  And I am all for whatever draws you to the true message of Christ.  In listening to the pastor's message, he wasn't wrong.  He used scripture to get his message across to his audience........a room full of single women who probably struggle with this issue everyday. And from the video, they didn't seem to have a problem with it.  They were testifying and carrying on.....LOL!  So while the phrase might not have been my choice to get my message across, I believe his point was well served in getting others to listen to his message.  This may have been the only Word some one heard all day or all week or all month.....so it did not come back void.  So while your personal conviction may be this is not the church or messenger for me, for some one else, this could be the message that gets them closer to the cross.  Overall, it wasn't a big deal to me, but I understand some people's uncomfortableness.......but I couldn't understand the complete outrage.  Maybe it's just me : )

There was great internet buzz recently about a picture of a felon that was posted.  Many women left comments under the picture saying he was attractive.  This sent people up in arms.  I thought this was quite interesting because the ones who had the MOST to say about this topic were men.  They were calling these women thirsty, and loving thugs, and all manner of things.  LOL. Now I didn't read the comments of the women, and heard that there were TONS of inappropriate and crazy comments on his pic and even a fund to raise his bail.  Now THAT is extreme. And yes, that is thirsty. But what was funny to me was that guys even went up in arms by women stating a simple truth: he is a physically attractive man.  Period.  Does that mean I want him?  NO.  Does that mean I want a thug or bad boy?  NO.  Does that mean I am thirsty?  I sure hope not.....there are several men I see everyday who I think are physically attractive. Doesn't mean I want them either.  The point is, women have the ability to think a man OR woman is physically attractive and have no sexual or lustful desires towards them.  At ALL.  We also have the ability to not be attracted to some one, and over time and charm, think he is the sexiest thing alive.  LOL.  We're just weird that way. Truth be told, I always think it a shame and travesty when an intelligent, creative and attractive young black man goes to jail......because potential has been lost;  at least temporarily.

Instagram is a social media site where you can post pictures.  They range from selfies, to OOTD, to nature pics, to vacations and the whole gamut.  But 2 phenoms about IG confuse me....1) getting likes and 2) posting those who have liked your posts.  Now I understand that we are posting pics for others to see or comment or to update friends and family about our lives and special moments.  Yes, you expect some one to "like" them.  But what confuses me, are those people who state that some one is all on their IG lurking but never liking their pics.....how can you tell?  No seriously, is there an app for that?  How can you tell?  If some one is always commenting to you about the things you do and places you've been and you know they only know that thru IG, I see your point.  But otherwise, maybe my pics just don't inspire you to "like".  Maybe you are not on IG as much as I am and don't see half the pics I post.  Maybe you follow a LOT more people than I do and your timeline is flooded with activity.  And furthermore, maybe I never even noticed who didn't "like" my pics.  The second part to my confusion is that screen shot of the person who has "liked" several of your photos.  You know the one.....where they have a list of 5 pics and the follower who liked them....and they "shout out" the follower for showing them love.  The part that confuses me, is what is the person supposed to do next?  It would make me feel a bit stalkerish, LOL.  And am I supposed to "like" the pic of me "liking" all the pics?  And how does this make other followers feel who also show love?  I'm just not sure about the etiquette of IG.  I need a handbook.  LOL

It's Just Hair

Yep, I have FINALLY said it out loud.  IT'S JUST HAIR!!!  I don't get the big deal.  Now hear me out, hear me out.  I applaud and support the natural movement, the healthy hair movement, etc....  And you have every right to be proud and wear your t-shirts and use your hashtags; they are cute and I enjoy them!  But here is what I mean when I say it's just hair.  It does not define me nor my beauty nor self worth.....it's just hair.  I applaud and encourage those ladies who go natural to embrace their natural beauty, or are trying to attain healthy hair.  That's cool, do YOU!  On the same hand, I applaud and encourage those ladies who wear weaves and wigs to achieve different looks or who want an easy maintenance style.  That's cool, do YOU!  The worrisome part is the battle between the two....LOL!

I have read blogs and comments where #TeamNatural will degrade and condemn those with relaxed hair stating that they hate themselves and need poison to feel beautiful and wear all this weave......huh?  And on the flip side, I have seen the other side rage against #TeamNatural and state they are not combing their hair and claiming everyone doesn't look good natural.....huh?  Why must your pride and preference for one make you degrade the other?  I know we all have our personal reasons for how and why we style our hair in certain ways and each face our own frustrations and exasperation, but I don't see the point in tearing down the other.  If you want to educate others on why you choose your certain style and rave about the benefits and versatility, then great.  We could all learn from that.  But to spend time condemning the other..........????

And why has this bothered me?  Because as black women we have so much more to worry about in our community and our public perception that THIS should NOT be the most prevalent topic of interest.....and definitely not divide us.  Straight, braided or natural, the "white" community doesn't completely understand our hair anyway so this battle is just between us.  I think we would be better served to uplift and support each other, regardless of hairstyle, because in the end....it's just hair.

Why do I say it's just hair.....because there are many women battling cancer or alopecia or other diseases and couldn't give a rat's tail about what's growing out of their scalp...but are concentrating on their health

Why do I say it's just hair.....because hair is a main component of why black women don't exercise

Why do I say it's just hair.....because you buy any kind of hair you want

Why do I say it's just hair..... because it doesn't make you a better or worse person

Why do I say it's just hair.....because in case you have a condition, it grows back

Why do I say it's just hair.....because it's YOUR head

Now, if we would jump on this bandwagon of health, diet and nutrition, or education, or empowering other women, forcing the media to portray positive examples........then we would have something going  : )

By the way, huge kudos to BGR (Black Girls Run),  National Coalition 100 Black Men and National Coalition of100 Black Women,  National Urban League, Mocha Moms, Greek Fraternities and Sororities and all other organizations that work hard everyday to improve, educate and uplift their communities.  And another huge kudos goes out to journalists and media groups who fairly represent all classes and races.  We see you and appreciate you.

8 Things Women just don't do Anymore

I read an article online earlier about the 8 thing women don't do anymore.  It contained things like cooking, cleaning, fixing his plate, giving compliments, etc...  And the comments from the men were all in agreement. Talking about the quality of the women today and how we need to be focused on those things and getting back to the old fashioned standards, back to the traditional responsibilities and attributes.  Usually, these type of articles and comments don't bother me.  I mean, it's an article written based on some one's life experiences or opinions or whatever and should be read for entertainment or educational purposes.  If it applies to you and you want to change it, fine.  If it doesn't apply to you, move on and be fine.  It's just an article.  But this particular one touched me in a weird way.

As background, I will give a little peek into how I was raised.  My father was the breadwinner in my family, although my mother worked for a number of years.  But my mother ran the household;  paid the bills, cooked everyday, made my father's plate, washed and ironed his clothes, cleaned the house, EVERYTHING.  My dad didn't even know where the iron was because he never had to iron a shirt.  She was that traditional wife that the article talked about.  So I understand the guys talking about wanting this kind of woman as a wife.  Hell, I do too.  LOL.  But there is an underlying piece....my Daddy.  As I mentioned before, he was the breadwinner.  My mother worked, when she did, because she chose to, not because she had to.  There were several years where she did not work : ).   My father spoiled my mother....and I mean spoiled.  The only thing he ever really said no to her about was a pond and a dog. Everything else was, let me work on it.  Her dream house: done.  Her Cadillac: done.  Her wardrobe: banging.

So in my traditional value mindset, that's how it works.  Of course you take care of your husband.  You make sure he looks good, has something on his stomach, make sure he has a nice clean place to come home to and represent him well in public.  YES!!!  That needs to happen.  In return, your husband protects and provides for you in a loving way.  So I agree with the article, women should "return" to this traditional mindset.  But here is what got me with the article, it didn't really explore the reasons WHY this change in culture had occurred or how men seek these qualities in women.

Here are a few reasons why I think this has occurred.....key word being THINK.........LOL

1. Fatherless daughters - there are a good number of women who didn't grow up with both father and mother in the household.  They didn't constantly see an interaction between a man and woman in love.  So the "training" for how to treat your husband was not there.  In even worse cases, there was never a constant male figure in their life to positively look up to in a relationship with their mother.

2. Women in workforce/Income potential - women work just as many hours and contribute the same amount of income to the household as men do now.  So the time devoted and energy to household chores has been cut.  Because those traditions have changed and responsibility has been shared, it has become natural to anticipate that the household duties become shared as well.  Sidenote: kids are much more busy today than we were so after going to the job working more than 40 hrs. a week, transporting kids to and fro, there just isn't the time in the day to cook and clean before the man gets home.

3. Play Marriage/No Title - we are entering "situationships" more and more so women are constantly confused as to the "privileges" the man gets.....sticky situations.  Why should she cook, clean and dote on him when he's not showing they have a future together.....why not save that energy and effort for some one else???

4. Overly Metro-sexual men - the traditional expectation/perception of the man/husband is strong, hard-working, handy, not afraid to get his hands dirty, etc....we have a traditional "want" from our men as well. We want some one to cut the grass, take out the garbage, take care of the car and fix stuff in the house.  But there have been an influx of men who don't value these traditions.  They don't feel a need to take care of the woman in this way.  There also have been an influx of men who are into fashion, beauty care treatments, and looking good as much as women.  Not saying that there is anything wrong with a man taking pride in his appearance, but it honestly puts more pressure on the woman.  The typical man notices when she puts effort into looking good, but the truly metro-sexual man will notice if she doesn't have the cutest shoes on, or hair isn't quite laid, or not all the way put together.  So since he's not the traditional man, she doesn't feel she has to be the traditional woman.

5. Men don't have to Seek - outer appearance is understandably the first attraction a man has towards a woman......is he attracted to what he sees?  Then comes all the intangibles.  But the game has changed.  It has become ok for women to approach and pursue men.....quite different from the traditional woman we hear about. And if she's a pretty and nice girl, sure...why not?  He already knows she like him, so the fear of rejection isn't there. And who wouldn't be flattered by an attractive girl approaching you?  The only issue is, the self selecting was done for him.  He didn't seek out his ideal woman, one was appointed to him.  So the skills, context clues, etc.  of finding and attracting the "traditional" woman has not been done.  I'm not saying a woman that approaches a man is not going to cook and clean and dote, but she's probably far from the traditional.  And it's nothing wrong with that.  He just can't blame a non traditional woman for not having traditional values.

We just have to be cognizant of a simple fact:  You REALLY can't want your cake, eat it too AND expect not to gain weight or have to work out.  There HAS to be some compromise and work put in, or it won't balance.   From my perspective, if he wants that traditional woman who does the 8 things from the list, he has to bring some value to the table as well........for the right man, a LOT of non-traditional women will do some traditional things : )  I have seen it numerous times.  So just because she doesn't start off a certain way, talk sweet to her, get her car washed and tires checked, send her a thinking of you text and watch how she whips up that favorite meal : )

And just because you were wondering, I love to cook but don't do it everyday,  Find it difficult to just cook for me.  Never felt a strong desire to consistently cook for a man, but it's something I'm committed to working on.  I'm a clean person, but messy.  As in, kitchen and bathroom will be sparkling but clothes will be strewn on bed.  But Molly Maid keeps a mean house and is the best $90 a month I spend : )  I don't curse very much at all, I work out at least a couple of times every week, I like to dress up but also have a slum side......sometimes I just can't get it together.  I think I'm just ok with the compliments - could definitely acknowledge more.  I'm pretty good with anticipating needs and am super thoughtful.

Advice to my Younger Self

This past weekend I had the experience of travelling to NY with a great group of ladies and had a blast!! From breathing the same air as Denzel as I watched him perform in "A Raisin in the Sun", to going thru the most thorough security check EVER in life to being accosted by a he/she, I have stories to TELL! But that's for another blog.
Today I want to talk about a conversation I had with the ladies this weekend. The trip was organized by a friend of mine who wanted to take her college-aged niece to NY for her first time and surround her with professional mid thirties to early forties women. At dinner one night, she asked us what would be our one piece of advice we would give to her niece as she embarks upon real womanhood and the adult working world. What things do we wish we would have known then, which is what inspires this blog post today. What advice would I have given 22 yr old Drea Nicole? After careful thought and consideration, here is my list:

 1. Never tell your family how much or how little money you make; only leads to problems. From folks wanting to borrow money because "you got it" or folks commenting on the price of things YOU own, or, my all time favorite, folks just expecting you to contribute or do certain things that have NOTHING to do with you, to folks wondering why you paid so much for college only to do this........ The canned responses are "I'm comfortable" "I do alright" or "I can pay all my bills and have a little left over for me" This will save you a lot of uncomfortable conversations in the future. Sidenote: you get everything from Target on SALE

 2. A year is a SHORT amount of time, don't worry about wasting it; I know that doesn't sound like you, but at 22 and 23 yrs old, its SOOOO true. And I don't mean to be lazy and unfocused and do NOTHING, but it's ok if you are not sure about something - you can give it a try for a yr. and if it doesn't work out, try something else. Or go on that risky endeavour for a year to see what happens. Do a mission trip if you desire, try acting on Broadway, move to Chicago cause you've always loved it, do it all. These are the things you can do young, because it's a completely different story at 30. And staying in that profession or company that you knew was a wrong fit at age 24, becomes WAAAY more complicated to leave at 33. It can be done, but there's so much more to consider by then

 3. You don't know everything, and no one expects you to - you don't have to be perfect the first day on the job, and you don't have to pretend you understand completely when you don't have a clue. Ask questions, admit when you've made a mistake and ask for feedback on how to improve. Even more, you don't have to be combative or loud to prove you are right. Strategically communicate your ideas and evidence and it will be heard. It may take some time, but with consistency and persistence, it WILL be heard

 4. Embrace living by yourself - You have no clue who you are yet. You always thought you were neat, turns out you were just considerate. You kept your place neat because you lived with others. You will learn SOOOO much about yourself that you never realized. You are scared to sleep in house by yourself so you keep tv on, you don't like wearing clothes in the house, you love to decorate and entertain......who knew?

5. Date for fun - No need to figure out how he'll work into your future plans, or wonder if you should date him because you may have to move in a few years; don't worry about ANY of that. Just date to have fun and meet new people. And stories to tell later :) And don't wait so late develop your vixen attitude...it will serve you well in your early 20's :)

 6. Travel - go visit friends and family and go on girls trips......don't wait so long to discover this pleasure

7. Set goals and plans....don't let life just happen to you. Just because things are going well does not mean that you don't have to take an active part in planning your life. There is so much untapped potential inside of you, it just needs to be developed and honed. Use this time to develop that potential so you can run with it in your 30's

 8. Spend time and energy on people and things that matter - this is probably one of those life lessons that you will just have to learn the hard way, but focus your time and energy on people that SHOW that you matter. Stop wasting it on people who won't even text you on your birthday. Focus your energy on things that matter to you; family, friends, volunteer activities......leave all the superficial things that people expect you to participate in alone; it's not meant for you. One of the hardest lessons you will have to learn

 9. Ask an expert about life matters.....and they won't always be your parents - just because Daddy did it, doesn't mean it is the best thing for you to do. Ask some more questions about buying a house, having a credit card, leasing vs. financing a car. There may have been special circumstances in Daddy's life that had him make the decisions he did that don't apply to you. You need to establish credit, so you putting items on a credit card will actually HELP you in purchasing your home

 10. Embrace fear - you are a pretty calm and positive person, so when you're scared, it's usually because you are being pushed out of your comfort zone. GO FOR IT!!! That's where you learn and grow. Apply for that role, volunteer for that committee, speak up at that meeting......even at a young age, you have a lot of insight to offer and a lot to contribute

And if "IF" were a fifth, we'd ALL be Drunk

As I was getting my hair done the other day, I mentioned to my stylist that I would be going to Jamaica soon. He asked who was travelling with me and I told him 3 of my girlfriends :) He asked, "No men? Ya’ll go on a lot of girl's trips, where can a guy take you?" I didn't know how to answer this question.......not because I couldn't think of at least a dozen places I'd like to go with a boo, but because I struggle to see how one has to do with the other. And he is not the first person to share these sentiments; I hear it quite often actually. And not just about my girl trips, but about my purchase of a home, my bougie habits, etc.... The premise being that because I am treating myself now, when a partner enters my life, he won't have anything to add because I've seen and done so much already. (insert confused face here). And my confusion comes because of 2 reasons 1)why couldn't we continue to enjoy and build and encounter new experiences? I mean really, there are sooo many things/experiences that could be enhanced by a partner and sooo many ideas/places I haven't even thought of yet. The least of my concerns is what we will do together or what he can add to my life.........that list is ENORMOUS!!! But also 2)am I supposed to choose a mate to add material things to my life? Or am I supposed to choose a partner who loves, encourages, protects, and provides for me? Because I really don't understand how my trips, house, bougie trinkets affect my accessibility to a partner. I could see if I was boasting about it (side note: which would be ridiculous by the way - not discounting my blessings but it's FAR from the lifestyles of the rich and famous) but I'm just living, as I assume he is as well. This thinking raises concerns for me because I believe we get caught up in thinking that providing is purely financial. So, he has to provide the house, the trips, the jewelry and cars and such.....and all of that is nice, do not get me wrong, but that ain't all. I used to know a dude who offered (on many occasions) to buy/provide the phone service that transfers your house calls to your cell phone. I TRIED to explain that I did not want that because I had a home office and did not want my work calls going to my personal cell phone. But he NEVER offered to change my light bulb that was clearly out in my house (he alerted me of this fact) even after I explained that I was afraid of the high ladder needed to change it. He was so caught up on ways to provide for me financially (evidenced by his house & car owning tour) that he failed at basic provisions. (side note- I also wondered at what kind of cell phone plan did he have that calling my TN cell phone number was "long distance" for him & why he didn't like to call my cell during the day & preferred the house phone?? was this the okie doke?) This could be a symptom of the gold digger epidemic....are we all taught to look for men to provide $$$ so that becomes our only interest? Hmmmmmm........ But thoughts like this not only affect dating but other aspects of our lives. How often do we put off doing something we want to do now because we are waiting for the "right" time? I'm not going to the beach until I lose 20lbs; I'm not going to see that movie until I have someone to go with: I'm going to wait for a special occasion to use these new plates-LOL; These may all seem like small examples but they point to bigger moves and thoughts in our life. We get that dreaded disease of the "iff-onlies". You know the disease...that nagging voice in your head that sounds a little like a mix of an old Jewish grandmother and a 3 yr. old throwing a tantrum. "if only I were smarter, I would apply for this new role I saw" or "if only I were smaller, I'd go to my reunion" and "if only I were prettier, I'd dress up more often" and the list goes on. Now let's be clear, goal setting is great :) If you want to lose 15 lbs. in time for beach season and reunion, then by all means set it and go for your goal, but don't let something as insignificant as a number on a scale stop you from living your life!! Because it's just going to pass you by while you're waiting on the sidelines. So don't question me as I go on my girl trips, try different classes, do community service, and set financial and health goals.......better yet, go ahead and question it, I'll be too busy DOING to even hear :) By the way, I'm the person who USES the guest towels and good china :) I very rarely "save" an outfit and think most occasions where people who care for one another get together is special

Break Babies

Hey Y'all :)...........all three of y'all. LOL! Guess what? I'm back!! I know it's been a while but the inspiration has to hit me to blog and I've just been empty lately. This winter has just been so COLD...just disrespectful. But Spring is trying to peep around the corner and the fever has hit.....I'm ready to write.

Today I want to chat with you about break babies. This topic has been top of mind for me since Dwayne Wade and Ludacris just announced their break babies a few months ago. Let me explain what a break baby is for those of you that may be new to the term. A break baby is the baby that is conceived with another partner when a couple goes on "break". I guess we need to define what "break" is too.......

But to define break is more difficult, at least for me. Generally speaking, if you ask a woman what a break is, she would tell you that it is a time of reflection to decide and evaluate where a relationship is going, etc, etc, etc. (insert confused face here) Now, generally speaking, if you ask a guy what a break is, he would tell you that he is single....PERIOD. It ain't no reflection time, no figuring out feelings, none of that. He is single. So the first issue with taking a "break" from a relationship is that there is a possibility of the parties having a different interpretation of what this break means. Which leads to the second issue: when a girl goes on a "break" or arrives at the end of a relationship, she buys ice cream, calls up her girlfriend(s) and has an emotional catharsis. She is not thinking about other guys...she needs time to heal or time to think or time to do whatever it is that we do. LOL. She just can't handle dealing with another guy until she is sure about her feelings, and has had closure, or tried to reconcile. But it seems to be different for the guy......he's just single. And the biggest advantage to being single is this: he gets to sleep with whomever he wants. PERIOD. So while we're lamenting and crying and being all emotional, he's being single. It's probably been a while since he tried something new. LOL.

So that's how these "break babies" come into play. i.e. Luda and DWade. And while we say what we would and wouldn't do if that happened to us, it really doesn't matter. To each his own. The more interesting spin to me is; what if the woman had a break baby? Would DWade still be around if Gabby turned up pregnant from "break"? Even better still, would Tyrone take me back if he suspected that during our "break" I exercised my single card? And again, I'm generally speaking, but the answer is probably not.

So why go on break? Why do we women feel the need to do this? I think what we are saying is that we need time to figure out if this is really right for us and where do we want this relationship to go, blah, blah, blah. LOL. And I think that time of reflection is healthy and needed. I am a deeply introspective person and have all kinds of random revelations. And I think men do the same, except in a different way. We HAVE to talk about it...they don't. Do you think there is a way we can do this without going on "break"? Has some one ever went on "break" with you and didn't even tell you? I think this happens a LOT......LOL. You know it does......he doesn't call as much, he doesn't spend any prime time with you, the aggravated voice, the broken promises, etc... And this may be a completely different blog topic, but dudes are good for keeping you around, even when they KNOW they aren't feeling you like that anymore. Just no need to get rid of the benefits until something better comes around...anyway, that's another time :)

No grand insight today or words of wisdom or top 10 list, just random thoughts and musings to ponder and discuss amongst friends :) Chat with ya soon!

It's this one thing.......nevermind, it's actually TEN

Hey Ya'll!  I know I know.....it has been a LONG time, I shouldn't have left you :)  But the summer has been incredibly busy and I just haven't felt like writing.  But that's not to say that I didn't learn anything or have mind blowing revelations, I just didn't know how or wasn't ready to reveal them to you yet.  But after seeing Beyonce, Maze & Bobby Rush in concert(not at the same time), getting turnt up at Mam-Maw's 80th birthday party, the Harper Family Reunion and a girlfriends getaway in Charleston, S.C. I have several questions......Of course I have my own opinions, but I want to know what ya'll think too......all 4 of you :)  LOL!

1.  Is God trying to tell me to take one of these old men up?  I mean, what else could it be?  Now I have known since age 20 that old men LOVE me, and have come to accept it, but to say it's my destiny.....that's too much.  But I believe God is trying to tell me something, and I hope I am not hearing him correctly.  Let me explain to you why;  I have countless stories of  being in situations where the oldest guy in the room will find me and follow me and approach me but it has become more intensified lately.  In the past 30 days, my ratio of age appropriate advances to older gentlemen is 0 to 5. 0 to 5.  I had a man who sat beside me on the plane tell me he was hoping he would get to sit next to me and that he wishes he could come back to Charlotte and take me out, and that he would drop me off at my hotel in Memphis and that he would drive up and take me golfing.  Did I mention he was 62???

2.  Have you noticed how guys are very comfortable with asking other guys about girls but girls are careful in asking other girls about guys? Let me explain; A group of people can get together and bring friends and mingle.  Guys have no problem with asking another guy at the scene "What's up with ole girl?" "Is that you?" "Know anything about the thick one?"  and other questions to find out if it's safe to approach her or just to get a little background info.  Where as with ladies, or at least my friends, will never ask about a guy at the scene.  Why do you think that is?  I believe it's because we think by asking about him we may be starting a competition with another girl, or that some one will take the question out of proportion.

3.  Do you ever think that you live in an alternate universe?  For example, I don't really think I have haters.  If I do, they are really quiet but if I read the trends and posts on IG and FB, haters are at an all time high.  And everyone has them.  Am I missing something?  Same thing with men bashing.  I may read the occasional FB post tirade about "ain't no good men" and blah, blah, blah, but it's definitely the minority.  But if I listen to some comments, this is all you hear women talk about. Who does this?  And side chicks?  When did they become the new phenomenon to hate on?  Who do you know that purposely became a side chick?  I feel the same way about women only looking for men $$, women who constantly gossip and spread rumors about their girls, and abrasive dudes.......I mean I KNOW it happens, I hear to many stories about it but it doesn't seem to be normal in my life or group.  ??

4.  Is it ok that I don't believe in visiting folks in jail?  I mean if it was an immediate family member like mom or dad or child, then I would.  But cousins, aunts, uncles, old friends....nah.  If you wanted to see me you wouldn't have gotten locked up.  I guess I might bend depending on the circumstances....but if it's some foolishness.....see you when  you get out!!  Am I wrong for this?  You have to allocate a WHOLE day to see some one in jail, for only a short visit....chile puh-lease!!

5.  Has anyone else had the revelation (it happened within the last yr or so.......believe its one of life's over 30 lessons) that you will not restrain yourself so others won't pre-judge you or feel uncomfortable around you?  Now I'm not saying to purposefully make others feel out of place, but I'm DONE with not being authentic because of your stereotypes or insecurities.  Yes, I like to eat there, it's one of my favorite restaurants.  Never asked you to take me there so don't give me the LOOK when I say I like Del Frisco's and Dresslers.  I also like hole in the wall Mexican and seafood spots.  But I'm not going to act like I don't know about or enjoy nice spots because you think it's putting on airs.  Whatever!!  And yes, that's a Kate, or a Tory, or an MK.  Again, NEVER asked you to support any of my habits so no need to worry about it.  I also am an Old Navy and Francessca's FIEND and visit at least twice a month. So if you want to put a label on me before you even get to know me, that's okay with me now.  I'm still going to get to know you on a personal level and treat you with kindness and respect.  How you feel about me is on you.  LOL!   And in the past, the weirdest things would get me "classified"...........that I live in Ballantyne, that I have an MBA, that I'm an AKA.  Ok, ok......I understand the AKA part :)

6.  Will anyone join SA - Shopaholics Anonymous with me if I charter it?  I may have a problem.  I LOVE shopping a good sale.  If it's over 50% off and at one of my favorite stores, you can be assured I'm at least going to LOOK to see if there's something I like.  Now I'm not so bad that I have a shopping debt or not paying bills, but I could very well give more to help people, get aggressive in the stock market, save up for a personal car if "THE MAN" acts up or "the REVOLUTION" comes......

7.  Who is taking me to their Homecoming weekend?  No, I'm serious, I wanna go.  My alma mater XU doesn't have a football team so Homecoming is really for the students and significant anniversaries.  I guess I could go to Tennessee's homecoming since I did graduate from there as well, but it's not the same.

8.  How many break up speeches did you hear before you actually ended it?  And what I mean by break up speeches are the significant moments that you ignored that let you know he or she wasn't the one for you.  This has become my new line.......watch out, may have a blog about it soon.  LOL

9.  Why did ABC feel the need to break down the science of twerking?  Really?  And why were we so appalled at Miley Cyrus twerking?  I was appalled that she had on sagging booty shorts, sounded and looked awful, and completely made a fool of herself.......twerking was just a side effect.  Many other artists have twerked on that stage and we have said nary a word.  Is it because it's Hannah Montana?

10.  Why is being bougie considered by most to be a bad thing?  LOL!  I say this with comedic intent.  I consider myself bougie and wave my flag up high.  I like nice things, to stay in nice hotels, to read about the lifestyles of the rich and famous.  But I don't think I'm "too good" for anything.

Girlfriends Talk

Ok....so you know how we ladies are?  We can turn a 5 minute occurrence into a 2 hr. conversation.....it's just in our nature, generally speaking.  But I wanna bring up a couple of observations, proclamations and questions that were ignited by a conversation I had with a girlfriend recently.  Nothing deep or any insightful take aways, just some random musings and my thoughts on a particular subject.  Humor me :0

1.  If every time we go out, you're on the hunt for a dude, I'm not hanging with you anymore.  LOL!  I'm all for being open to every opportunity and making yourself available but I can't be with you looking thirsty.....just not a good look.  AND, I am a horrible wing girl.  I'm half blind so I can't tell if he's looking at you or cute, and I will wander off and run my mouth with any random......*shrug*

2.  Yes, I am  a girly girl and am all excited that you met a cute dude and ya'll have been talking on the phone, but let's limit this story to the 10 min it deserves and MOVE on.  Let me know more after ya'll have been on 3 or more dates.  Then we can chit chat.

3.  So ok, we want to make sure we're dressed appropriately, I understand that.  But the most detail needed is cute top and jeans or after work clothes........you should be able to figure out all the rest.  Is it ok to wear a dress?  if you want to....what about colored jeans? if you want to..... you wearing sandals or heels? i guess so....... And not to be rude, but I am not a fashionista.  The dress code I will give is either casual chic, work clothes, formal or dressy.  Now I will offer my opinion on appropriateness, accents and shoes and such, but if we're asking long maxi or short sundress....I mean really?  does it matter?  We're just going out for dinner and drinks.....

4.  So he didn't call back.....Ok, he wasn't interested.  I am NOT the one to go into a long detailed convo about all the things it could have been, or what you did or what he did.  Not if ya'll were just hanging out.  Now, if it was something more serious, then I will definitely give the appropriate shoulder to cry on and encouragement.  But if he just stopped calling, he wasn't interested.  Let's just say "that punk.....don't know what he's missing.  Yeah girl!"  and MOVE on.  Seriously

5.  We're having dinner and the WHOLE conversation  is about how you need to lose weight and how good men are hard to find.....I'm not eating with you anymore.  LOL!  And I'm not saying I can't talk about these things.  I'm very girly, I can talk about boys with the best of them, but I have other interests and thoughts so I can't spend the WHOLE time talking about it.  I mean, can't we talk about trashy reality T.V.?   And PLEASE, don't talk to me about dieting and losing weight.  Not in a negative way.  If you are telling me about your goal and plan, then I'm with ya!  I'm your biggest fan and encouragement.  But if you're just going to put yourself down, and talk negative about your body....I CAN'T.  More than likely I will turn into Dr. Phil and ask you who made you feel like you were not worthy?  Turn it into a couch session.  LOL

Breaking Point

Hey Family : )

I know it has been a while since I have updated but nothing was really speaking to me........There was nothing that I just HAD to write about.  I was feeling a bit uninspired.  But today it hit me........a subject that has been in draft in my inbox for a while, I just didn't have a clearly laid out plan on how to write about it.  That subject is: BREAKING POINT

I am usually a very happy and friendly person.....sometimes a bit to my detriment.  I can be extremely patient, don't show anger often and try to play peacemaker in tense situations.  It's just my personality.  So my friends and family are often surprised and even find it comical when I reach my "breaking point"  You know what that is: when you have run out of freaks to give.(please excuse my English)  When my patience runs out and my efforts for your well-being and feelings is non existent.  Not that I am going to do anything to purposely hurt anyone, but when I am at the point that I'm definitely not going out of my way to help nor will I be concerned if my bluntness hurts your feelings .....my BREAKING POINT.

I have discovered that my breaking point is pretty consistent.......that the same situations cause me angst and cause a change in my naturally jovial personality.  Wanna know what they are??  Here they go:

1) Taking advantage - While I realize I have a BIG part in this aspect, I am terribly disappointed and put off when some one takes advantage of my kindness.  I say I play a big part because I know that I often put myself out there to be used.  I will be the first to sign up to help, offer $$, pay for meals and drinks, get nice presents, etc.... But that doesn't mean that I'm supposed to or have to do these things.  And when people purposely manipulate because they KNOW I will, it just irks me.  Borrowing money with no intention to pay back, cornering me into favors, and getting attitude when I am offering voluntary service..... Don't you hate that?  YOU asked me to help you move, but get mad when I have to leave in 4hrs....or YOU owe me money, but get mad when 2 months later I politely ask you status of repayment.  SMH

2) Counting my change - I honestly don't know why this one bothers me so.....need to do some praying on it. LOL.   Let me explain what "counting my change" is......so you're at the mall with a buddy and you see some fabulous shoes that you MUST have.  Your buddy mentions not once, not twice, but several times that she would not buy those shoes because they're too expensive.  So ok, that's fine.  But she continuously brings it up at other occasions as well.  For example, "well you bought those shoes I know you can afford to loan me $20" or "you bought those shoes so I know you can go with me to this restaurant" etc..... Or, some one notices you carrying a designer handbag and incessantly comments how they would NEVER spend that kind of money on something like that. Basically, because you have expendable income to do one thing, you can and SHOULD have expendable income to do other things that are more important in their eyes.  OR, you are foolishly spending your money.  People, do NOT count my change.  Everyone spends their money in different ways and as long as I am not asking you to support my habit, I don't want to hear a surplus of comments....ok?  LOL!  But seriously, so if you buy a couple of carton of cigarettes and case of beer a week and I buy a handbag for the year, I'M foolishly spending money??  People spend their money on what they want to spend it on.  Some people play lotto, some gamble, some cars, some motorcycles and the list goes on and on.....I think we would all be better off if we just concentrated on our own finances and well-being.  And furthermore, not everyone has the same expenses so the budget for luxury items will be different for everyone.  IJS

Ain't Nobody got Time for Dat!!!

This is a very personal list for me..........might not speak to you but some things I just had to express.

Ain't nobody got time for your insecurities........I have enough of my own that I am trying to get over and deal with.  Don't project yours on me to the tune of  "why are you doing that?" "you're going by yourself?" "how come you don't JUST....?"

Ain't nobody got time for you counting MY change........I admit I like nice things and am a proud flag carrier for the bougie committee but I have NEVER asked you to support any of my habits so don't worry about how much my handbag, shoes, beauty treatments etc cost

Ain't nobody got time for your complaining......I understand the need to vent every now and again, but that constant moaning and whining about EVERYTHING is just annoying

Ain't nobody got time for your religious debates........I am a child of the King and can't help but be amazed and in awe about what He does for me everyday.  However, I will not push it down your throat or try to convince you in any way.  I just live my life and treat everyone with courtesy and respect and expect you to do the same.  I won't share my testimony unless you ask me to

Ain't nobody got time for your concept of family.......when I say she is my mother and he is my brother, that's exactly what I mean. I have no problem and welcome you asking questions to get understanding, but you will not refer to them as "step" or "half" or "fake" or "real" with me.  Do that under your breath

Ain't nobody got time for you to use them......I know I put myself out there to be used at times, but when you take advantage and don't have any reciprocation.......just SMH.  Thankfully, I have always been given back pressed down, shaken together and running over from other sources :)

Ain't nobody got time for your uncompromising ways.....we can't always get what we want, and as nice as I am, I NEVER coddle.  That's too early for you, ok I'll see you when you get there. You don't want to pay that much, ok we'll get together next time.  You don't eat any of this food, did you pack a snack?  Oh, I'm sorry you'll have to wait.

Ain't nobody got time to wait on you to decide how you feel about me.......to steal the words from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (AKA Teddy Pendegrass :) "if you don't know me by now, you will never ever know me"  Truth is, you know exactly how you feel!!

Words for Women from Dr. Phil.........with tidbits from me :)

This is advice Dr. Phil gave to women a couple of years ago.  It really spoke to me then and still does now so I wanted to share.  Ramblings, foolywang and nonsensical comments in red are from me.  LOL!  Enjoy

If a man wants you, nothing can keep him away.
If he doesn't want you, nothing can make him stay..

Stop making excuses for a man and his behavior.  - he is not that busy, nor is he that stressed..he just don't want you.  Allow your intuition (or spirit) to save you from heartache.
Stop trying to change yourself for a relationship that's not meant to be.

Slower is better.
Never live your life for a man before you find what makes you truly happy.

If a relationship ends because the man was not treating you as you deserve then heck no, you can't 'be friends'. A friend wouldn't mistreat a friend.  - HALLELUJAH!!   Don't settle.

If you feel like he is stringing you along, then he probably is
Don't stay because you think 'it will get better'
You'll be mad at yourself a year later for staying when things are not better.
The only person you can control in a relationship is you. - WOW!
Avoid men who've got a bunch of children by a bunch of different women. - Shawty Lo....hahahahaha
He didn't marry them when he got them pregnant, why would he treat you any differently?

Always have your own set of friends separate from his.
Maintain boundaries in how a guy treats you. If something bothers you, speak up.

Never let a man know everything.* He will use it against you later.

You cannot change a man's behavior.* Change comes from within.

Don't EVER make him feel he is more important than you are...
Even if he has more education or in a better job.

Do not make him into a quasi-god.
He is a man, nothing more nothing less.
Never let a man define who you are.
Never borrow someone else's man. - borrow?  hmmmmm
A man will only treat you the way you ALLOW him to treat you.

All men are NOT dogs. - very true :)  lots of good ones out there
You should not be the one doing all the bending....
Compromise is two way street..

You need time to heal between relationships....
There is nothing cute about baggage....
Deal with your issues before pursuing a new relationship- PREACH

You should never look for someone to COMPLETE you...
A relationship consists of two WHOLE individuals....
Look for someone complimentary...not supplementary.

Dating is fun...even if he doesn't turn out to be Mr. Right.

Make him miss you sometimes...when a man always know where you are, and you're always readily available to him - he takes it for granted

Never move into his mother's house. Never co-sign for a man. - also, never date a man that doesn't have  reliable transportation method

Don't fully commit to a man who doesn't give you everything that you need.
Keep him in your radar but get to know others.

Scared of being alone is what makes a lot of women stay in relationships that are abusive or hurtful.

You should know that:
You're the best thing that could ever happen to anyone and if a man mistreats you, he'll miss out on a good thing. If he was attracted to you in the 1st place, just know that he's not the only one.

They're all watching you, so you have a lot of choices.
Make the right one.

Ladies take care of your own hearts....

Share this with other women and men (just so they know)...

You'll make someone smile, another rethink her choices, and another woman prepare

Education, Service and Relationships

Because I consider myself an armchair psychologist and a cross between Dr. Phil, Iyanla and sometimes Sister Souljah, I love analyzing others and analyzing myself.   And as I was preparing for my 2013, I spent a LOT of time in reflection on areas in my life where I wanted to concentrate.  I came up with relationships, education and service.  After so much tragedy and witnessing a lost generation, I knew I wanted to do more for my community, so I set out an intentional and focused plan on areas where I thought I could be beneficial.  That was easy.  I also knew that I had future goals for my career and creating sources of supplemental income, so I researched and planned courses and opportunities for me to sharpen my skills in order to have the life I desire.  That was also easy.

The real work came in my dealings with relationships. I desire to continue and to grow the friendships I currently have, be more available and present with my family, and to mentally and emotionally prepare myself for a relationship with a life partner.  So why is this such hard work for me?  Because in order to be purposeful and intentional in improving ME, I have to be honest and truthful in why this area is important and needs work.

It was easy diagnosing why education and service was important and needed work .  They just hadn't been focused on for several years as time, other interests and job stabilization got in the way.  And as I saw people around me who needed help, I HAD to do something.  And now that I am happy and comfortable with my job, I knew it was time to push and challenge myself to greater levels.....to really use my talents in a way that will help me live the life I desire.  It was a no brainer.  But identifying my breakdown of close relationships was much harder........because it can be painful to look inside.

Here's what I discovered:  I love HARD.  And when you love that hard and people leave, or change, or you outgrow, or they make bad decisions it is painful to endure.  It's like some one stole a little piece of you, and you long for and reminisce about they way it used to be.  And many times when you are building these relationships, you get rejected.  Your services are not wanted.  So under the guise of "minding my business" I haven't always formed the most connected relationships.  While I have gotten much better at it from growth and working on other parts of me, I don't make being connected a priority.  And when it's all said and done, I want to be known as a good daughter, sister, friend and confidante but I am not doing the WORK it takes to become that.  Not in the way I desire to be.....all emotional, all compassionate, and all introspective.  So I have decided to instead of letting people know how I feel about them and what they mean to me, to SHOW them.  To repair broken relationships, to let broken relationships go, to focus on people who focus on me and stop devoting time and attention to those who don't.  And that's a hard task for a people pleaser like me :)  But in the short time that I have made this a focused priority, I have gained SOOOOO much more than I have lost.

This lends itself directly to me preparing myself for dating, love, romance and all that other gushy stuff  :)   So paramount that I will say it again:  To repair broken relationships, to let broken relationships go, to focus on people who focus on me and stop devoting time and attention to those who don't.

The Message

I am a salesperson....not at heart, but by trade.  I have been in sales for over 10yrs now and it appears I will be here for a while.  In my professional world, as a salesperson, I have become somewhat of a MASTER of messaging.  I don't write long emails where you have to scroll down to see entire message, I use non-offensive words to get hard messages across and I always ask if I am understood or if that was the information they were looking for.  I try to be very clear and consistent with my words and my actions.  To date, I have done a pretty good job with this : )  **pats self on the back**

Early on in my career, one of my mentors stressed to me the importance of a message track.  My message track needed to be composed of three parts: performace, image exposure  (PIE).   And that I needed to have a 30 sec elevator speech about what I do well and how I add value to bottom line.  Since that time, I have held 3 different roles and have moved on to a new company, but at the drop of a dime I can recite my message track to any level.  "I manage distribution, pricing, merchandising and shelf placement of branded grocery products at a major retail chain in Southeast consisting of over 1600 stores and manage $45M trade budget where I have grown my product share in canned prepared pasta and oils to 80% and 16% respectively; in the top 10 of any  U.S. retailer. I am looking for opportunities to greater utilize and develop my skills in category management, consumer analytics and emerging market trends."   It changes depending on the time and recent accomplishment, but the base is always the same:  I am a manager in CPG sales with national retailer, I grow volume & share and I have the technical skills to do it.  PERIOD. But today's post is not about my professional message track, it's about my personal(dating)one.....or lack thereof.

I assumed that my intentions and actions were clear about what I wanted from the opposite sex.  I don't dress too provocatively, I don't engage in bedroom talk, I have a 5 finger rule.......I mean I am doing all the right stuff to let a man know that I am not trying to "kick it" or be a "bed buddy" or "homey/lover/friend"....................or so I thought.  But I was getting into situations where I was "mad cool" and "so accommodating" and "the homey" but never the GIRLFRIEND.  Now in my mind, I could chalk all this up to men being dogs and only wanting one thing..........but the truth is, these were good guys.  The problem was not with them, it was with ME

I wanted to look available but not desperate, sexy but not slutty, classy but not bougie, valuable but not high maintenance.  That's a LOT of work. It's easy to get mixed up when you're tying to do too much.  So here's the question, if I'm acting and carrying myself as a lady then what ELSE do I have to do to make my message clear?  And why in the world did he approach ME like that but Shanna got top shelf treatment??  Do we really wanna know the answer????   It's SOOOOO simple.  JUST SAY IT!!!!!  Period. Point. Blank.

My issue was I expected the guy to understand from my actions that I was looking for a relationship(P).  I expected him to interpret my intentions from my image(I);  I'm a good girl :).   And these were actually good guys who weren't out to do anyone wrong so I wasn't getting bad exposure(E).  My PIE was in order.  But the main ingredient was missing;  I had no message track.  I did not say that at this time in my life, my purpose for dating is to meet some one with whom I could potentially build a life.  That I love to have a good time and chill as much as the next one, but intimacy would not be involved on that level.  Instead, I smiled pretty, was easy to get along with and didn't say anything that would ruffle feathers.  Why?  Because I wanted him to like me.  After he liked me, THEN I could say the things I wanted to say.  But that's too late.....because by then I like him.  And I become more willing to let time slide and accept less than what I want.   And having that hard conversation is scary...we are afraid to sate our feelings for fear of the repercussions.  But regardless if I say it now or say it later, the repercussions are there.  Here's an important lesson I learned at thirty:  whether I say it out loud or not, I still want it.  So either I have to not want it anymore or state I want it and go after it.  Hey, it's worked very well in my professional life....might as well try it personally.

My other issue was not listening.  No, not that I talked too much or was focused on me, but I didn't pay attention to the signals right in front of me.  Maya Angelou said "when a man tells you who he is, believe him"  If he jokingly says that he is no good for a woman right now, HE MEANS IT.  You're not going to change his mind.  If you ask him what his intentions are and he hems and haws and says "sees where things are going" but doesn't give specifics....LISTEN UP!!  He may see how wonderful and what a great catch you are and change his mind, but don't hold  your breath. LOL!

Another issue I had was with trying to be the coach.....multiple dating....or the "bench".  You know, date several people at the same time and see who steps up to be the starting point guard.......Yeah, it didn't work for me either.  LOL!  I think that only works for men.  Between work, family, friends, AKA, JLC, church, Zumba, the gym, etc my schedule can't fit a bench.  "Ain't nobody got time for that"    Sweet "Georgia" Brown  You know it's time to stop pretending to play when you completely forgot some one on your team even existed. LOL!   And I also deem myself a loyalist.....if I like you, I like YOU.  Once I truly like you, I don't have the urge to think or look for anyone else.  Now, I'm not saying that if  I'm single that I'm not going to be open to other single guys just because I have a little crush on a guy who asked for my number......because I most definitely am.......I'm just not going to have a rotating line-up.

So the older I get, the more open and honest I have become.  I am very open that I love making new friends and hanging out, but I am not remotely interested in a casual sexual relationship.  I am dating to meet some one with whom I could potentially build a life.  I kinda like Regine's line from Living Single:  "I don't date; I audition life partners"  I'm constantly working on my PIE because it is essential to achieving the things I desire, but more importantly, it is essential to eliminating the things I don't.

The Truth about Men

In my mind, I think of myself as a mix of Dr. Phil, Sista Soulja and Iyanla.  Now, no one has ever told me that....haven't even come close but that's how my mind operates so work with me here.  I say this because I am always analyzing my feeling and emotions; or trying to figure out why this was said or done; or what makes people tick.  I have no psychology degree and don't remember much from the 1 psych class I did take back in 2000, but I consider myself an expert in various realms of human nature.  I give a lot of advice and share my wisdom with friends, family and strangers alike....but I always give the caveat "but I don't know what I'm talking about so take this with a grain of salt"....just so I won't be held responsible for a catastrophe that I am SURE is yet to come from my unsolicited and at times unwarranted advice.

The topic I know the LEAST about is men(unmarried)...strange creatures who defy the concept of MY logic.  LOL!  But it's one of my favorite topics to shed "my" wisdom and light on....here are a few of my favorites :)

1. I'mma call you right back means I'm doing something more important/entertaining than talking to you but I don't know how to tell you that
2. They only answer the question that is asked....which is so unlike women.  We have a need to fill in the blanks
3. Are selective with their "prime time" (Fri- Sun 6:00PM - 11:00PM)........if you're not getting it, you're not "selected"
4. Have a NEED to comment on women's body parts/etc when surrounded by other dudes.......no offense intended
5. Never really notice much about our hair...just that it's neat or tidy.....all that time we spend flat ironing and curling...SMH
6. If they're under 30, will never have enough towels, sheets, silverware etc......but have all the latest electronics
7. Love to take the garbage out for you......for real
8.  Don't do closure......that's definitely a woman thing
9. Will call tennis shoes, gadgets and cars sexy but won't notice you exfoliated, buffed, baby oiled up and spent over an hr getting ready
10. Are afraid of and want to immediately lie about 3 questions...1)What did you do last night?  2)Can we talk?  3)Can I go/Am I invited?
11.  Like to cuddle too  :)
12.  Don't mind co-ed baby showers, but hate the opening gifts portion
13.  Invented the "pulse" check.........they can't imagine you continuing to breathe and live a normal life after they left
14.  EVERY football game is important........bball, not so much
15. Hate to see you cry......even if it's your fault
16.  Think they have a chance if you smile and say hello.......for real
17.  Won't ask you the questions they don't want to be asked
18.  Understand all the entendres in rap songs but are LOST when you talk about reality TV
19.  Go to sleep and wake up to Sports Center......even tho they replay the SAME stories all week
20.  Show affection by actions......not words

But I don't know what I'm talking about, so take this with a grain of salt : )

Officially Missing You

Last month, my co-worker's wife passed away after a yr. and a half  battle with melanoma.  When I heard the news, I cried my eyes out.  She was 59 yrs old, was married and had 4 grown sons and a darling 2yr old grandson.  I cried because I knew how much she was loved and that she was going to be dearly missed.  And they don't make them any better than my co-worker, Tommy.  He is absolutely one of the nicest people that I have ever met; and his boys are just like him.  In support of him I attended the family/visitation hour and was amazed at their strength and how well they were holding up.  Kinda funny, but I don't even REMEMBER my Daddy's visitation.......I think I just went numb.  Not long after, Tommy returned to work because he said he wanted to get in a routine and not just sit at the house and mourn.  He brought pictures of her to work and talked openly about her and responded to all the sympathy notes, emails, etc.. he had received.  He talked about his worry for his sons and how they were holding up.  He doesn't act like nothing happened, he shows his hurt but also his hope and appreciation for the time they spent together.

This made me think of how I have grieved when people close to me passed away.  How did I respond, did I respond, and was it healthy?  Let's think............I lost my birth mother when I was 4 yrs. old, so I don't remember how I grieved.  I only remember pieces of parts of that time in my life.  I mostly remember my Dad doing my hair and working late.  I don't remember us discussing my birth mother or what happened.  I honestly still don't know, some kind of virus.  She was 29yrs. old.
My Grandaddy Lewis passed away when I was in the 2nd grade.  Every since I could remember, he had muscular dystrophy and wasn't able to walk, talk or do anything for himself.  My grandmother was his care taker and my cousin and I would put on plays and dances for him.  Now that I think about it, he and my Daddy had the same smile.  I didn't really grieve then either, but I definitely saw how it affected my family.  Everyone was crying.

When I was sixteen, I lost my Pap-Paw, one of the first men I ever loved.  He used to take me riding in his truck on Sundays and buy me M&M's....he had an early bedtime ritual of reading the paper and watching t.v. and I would always jump in his bed and play with him.....he used to make my brothers take me places...In him, I saw a strong, vocal man who took care of his family. And though he had the description of a hard mean fellow, he was a big teddy bear...especially with me :)  This one was hard on me because I realized how young he was, and how none of us have forever.  I cried and was sad, but didn't talk about it much.  I kind of internalized my pain.

Then July 9th, 2001 I got a call that my Daddy was in the hospital and I needed to get home right away.  I was doing an internship in NY.  My father died of an aneurysm at 49yrs old.  The first man I ever loved, the one who stood as an outstanding example of love, kindness, humbleness and compassion was now gone.  On the outside, I held up great.  I cried, but didn't break down....I laughed at jokes, mingled with the family, etc...But post funeral, I DID NOT want to talk about it.  Many of my classmates had NO CLUE that I lost my father just weeks before.  It was easier to pretend that he was out of town on business trip or at home.  I didn't want to think about it too much.  I was just numb.  But that year, when I went home for Christmas break, it was all too real.  He was not home....and he wasn't coming back.  It REALLY hit me then.  When I went back to school, I was a walking zombie.  I was functional, but I was not myself.  I didn't buy any of my textbooks for school, I skipped several classes, I didn't apply for or interview for ANY jobs although I was graduating that upcoming May.......this was SOOOO unlike me.  I had already been on 4 interviews before Christmas break and was in the process of applying for several more.  I just didn't want to be.  I didn't want to talk to my mother about it, because she was DEFINITELY grieving.  She was all by herself now, she had to be in the house everyday.  I decided to journal my feelings and just write. And slowly but surely, Andrea started to come around again.  But it wasn't until 2 yrs later that I was openly able to talk about my Daddy to people. Now, it's second nature to speak of him and his memory, but at the time...far from it.

During Hurricane Katrina, as I was worried for classmates and family that were in the direct line of the storm and most of whom had to evacuate, I received the call that my Granny had passed.  She was 94 yrs old.  I cried, I journaled and I told everyone about her.  Not about her death, but about her legacy.  About how she and Grandaddy Lewis with only minimal education sent all 5 of their kids to college; who all graduated and went on to receive Master's degrees and went into the field of education (all but my Daddy...he was a CPA) how they were Tuskegee University's "Parents of the Year" one year after they sent and graduated 4 of their children from that school...how she loved to watch the Atlanta Braves and never missed a game, how she always made you eat ham when you came to visit, how she never fried chicken but made the best apple pies, and how she had to have a bowl of ice cream every night.

This post today is just a look at grieving.......I don't think there is a right or wrong way to do it, we just need to allow ourselves the opportunity and permission to grieve, so it won't come out in destructive actions and behavior.
